Test Panels

Vancomycin

Overview of Test

Vancomycin hydrochloride has become the last line of defense in treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. This assay is the analysis of human serum for the quantitative determination of vancomycin for the diagnosis and treatment of vancomycin overdose and in monitoring levels of vancomycin to ensure appropriate therapy. Monitoring serum levels of vancomycin decreases the frequency of serious toxic effects.

Methodology

The Vancomycin assay is a homogeneous particle-enhanced turbidimetric immunoassay. It is based on competition between drug in the sample and drug coated onto a microparticle for antibody binding sites of the vancomycin antibody reagent. The microparticle reagent is rapidly agglutinated in the presence of the anti-vancomycin antibody reagent and in the absence of any competing drug in the sample. The rate of absorbance change is measured photometrically. This is used to determine the concentration of Vancomycin within the sample.
