Breakthrough Molecular Testing

UTI Testing by PCR with Antibiotic Resistance Markers

Recurrent and complicated urinary tract infections are often caused by more than one organism, and standard culture can miss them. Our UTI panel identifies the pathogens present and the resistance genes they carry from a single urine specimen, so the first antibiotic you choose is more likely to work.

Our Advances

Advanced PCR Testing for the Rapid Identification of Complicated, Recurrent, and Persistent UTIs.

While traditional culture testing can take 3-5 days, Total Lab Solutions leverages the power of advances molecular testing methodologies, providing highly accurate, personalized results in a fraction of the time, reducing the need for strictly empiric therapy and supporting antibiotic stewardship initiatives.

PCR testing has been shown to identify infections in 36% of the samples urine cultures showed to be negative.

Additionally, urine cultures can take up to a week to return results, whereas TLS reports PCR results within 48 hours of receipt.

The TOTAL Advantage of More Informed Treatment Decisions
Because bacterial, fungal, and co-infections can exist, UTI testing methods must be expanded to encompass a more targeted selection of pathogens. Our UTI panel identifies specific pathogenic organisms, helping to drive effective treatments for polymicrobial infection. While culture testing may return these results as “contaminated” or “mixed flora”, PCR UTI testing identifies the specific uropathogens in the specimen – even when multiple organisms are present.
Patient Side Effects
According to the CDC, 20% of hospitalized patients who receive antibiotics suffer adverse side effects. Antibiotics are a powerful tool that have saved countless lives and made several treatments possible. However, they are not always necessary. Like any other medicine, they should be used with purpose.
Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
Labeled by the CDC as “a serious threat to public health,” antibiotic resistant bacteria like MRSA are becoming more prevalent by the day with overuse of antibiotics cited as a significant contributor.

What it covers

The basic UTI panel covers 28 bacterial targets. The comprehensive panel adds STI pathogens and Candida species. Both include more than 40 antibiotic resistance markers.

Common questions

How is PCR different from culture?
Culture grows organisms over days and reports what grew. PCR detects organism DNA directly and is not affected by recent antibiotic use or slow-growing species.

What do resistance markers tell me?
They show genes linked to resistance against specific antibiotic classes. They guide the choice of therapy and do not replace clinical judgment.

Can I still order a culture?
Yes. Culture and sensitivity can be ordered with the panel.
