Test Panels

AST

Overview of Test

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is widely distributed throughout tissues with significant amounts in the heart and liver. Injury to these tissues results in the release of this enzyme into circulation, thus following for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction and liver damage. May be caused by hepatotoxins (drugs or alcohol), hemolysis, myopathy or ischemia.
