Apolipoprotein A-1

Overview of Test

Apolipoprotein (APO) A-1 is a protein that helps to bind and solubilize lipoproteins. It helps to regulate and control lipoprotein metabolism. It is a key mediator in cholesterol cellular homeostatis. Apo A-1 aids in removal of cholesterol, slowing their conversion into foam cells. Higher levels of Apo A-1 are often correlated with higher levels of HDL. Lower levels of Apo A-1 may indicate the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The American Heart Association guidelines state that in asymptomatic patients, Apo A-1 should not be the sole determination for CVD risk assessment.
