Apolipoprotein B

Overview of Test

Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) is a type of protein that helps to bind and solubilize lipoproteins. It plays a central role in carrying cholesterol and triglycerides from the liver and intestines to utilization and storage sites. Apo B is not recommended for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment by the American Heart Association. It can be useful for individuals who are high risk for CVD, either from family history or who have high cholesterol and triglycerides. It can also be indicative of conditions that either under or overproduce Apo B.
