Don't Let a UTI Go Undiagnosed

Total Lab Solutions provides Urine PCR (molecular) testing to detect the presence of common UTI-causing pathogens. Performed using a sample of your urine, molecular PCR testing identifies more pathogens, with greater accuracy, in patients with symptoms of a UTI (when compared to traditional urine cultures).

Use Proper Testing for Proper Treatment

Every year, an estimated 40% of UTI slip under the radar, receiving either an incorrect treatment or no treatment at all. Refuse to be a statistic and talk to your doctor today about PCR testing for UTIs. Fortunately, PCR testing allows a doctor to see the causes of infection – be it bacterial, viral, fungal, or a mix of the three – and prescribe the correct treatment to match.

Here’s Why You Need To Confirm Antibiotics Are Necessary Before Taking Them.

Inside of every person lives a collection of bacteria that aid in digestion and other natural processes. These bacteria are important to a healthy gut, a and may be damaged by the use of antibiotics. Without healthy bacteria in your gut, a patient you can be susceptible to a host of different gastrointestinal ailments.

If a doctor is going to take this step with a patient, it’s important to be crystal clear what it is they’re treating and whether the treatment will be effective. Unlike urine cultures and urinalysis, a PCR test can help doctors determine whether if antibiotics are necessary and which antibiotics are likely to be effective.

Antibiotics were designed to fight against bacteria – not viral or fungal infections. With urine culture exams only identifying bacteria, a patient could receive antibiotics when they have a viral or fungal infection – resulting in more harm than good.

However, antibiotics have been lifesaving for a reason – they save lives. When administered appropriately, antibiotics are a marvelous tool for doctors to use. A PCR test can confirm with your doctor if antibiotics are right for you.

One of the world’s biggest issues is the rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. With every patient prescribed antibiotics, bacteria are killed. But in their place, the bacteria that live go on to reproduce. The survivors had traits that made it more likely for them to live. And with those traits, they will replicate more bacteria that share the resistance.

Doctors everywhere are aware of this risk, and are contributing to preventing this growing global crisis. But doctors are also human – they care about their patients, and often prescribe antibiotics because they think the antibiotics will help. But if your UTI infection isn’t bacterial, the antibiotics won’t have anyone to fight, except for your gut biome.

PCR Testing Is Fast

Urine cultures have long been referred to as the “gold standard” for urine testing due to the level of information provided versus a quick look from a urinalysis. However, not only are they not as efficient as PCR tests in identifying pathogens – they take much longer to perform. Standard turnaround time for a urine culture is about a week, whereas our PCR testing can have results back within 48 hours.

PCR Testing Is Effective

A PCR, or polymerase chain reaction test, works by taking a “copy” of your DNA from the urine sample to see what microbes are affecting it. This form of testing detects a wider range of bacteria and other pathogens like viruses and fungi.

In recent studies, PCR testing was shown to identify infections in samples in 36% of the samples urine culture showed was negative. In addition, a PCR test can determine what antibiotics to use if any.
