An RT-PCR test is a sensitive test that reveals the presence of pathogens swiftly. From the sample, genetic material is extracted and then a special process of heating and cooling is used to make more of that genetic material grow. A chemical in the test will create fluorescent light if it detects viral or bacterial pathogens. From this, lab technicians can tell not only if one of the pathogens are present, but which one(s) specifically.

After collection, the swab is sealed and then sent to a laboratory.
