Albumin

Overview of Test

Albumin is synthesized in the liver, maintaining intravascular oncotic pressure. It is also a transport system for low water-soluble compounds such as hormones, ions, fatty acids and certain drugs. Low albumin levels can indicate a wide variety of conditions, such as liver disease, malabsorption, malnutrition, sepsis, and renal disease. High albumin levels are typically an indication of dehydration.

Methodology

Beckman Coulter AU680 analyzer with Carolina Liquid Chemistries reagent. Based on the dye binding capability of serum albumin. Albumin reacts with bromocresol green in acid medium to form a green color. The increase in color measured bichromatically at 600nm/800nm is proportional to the quantity of albumin in the sample.
