Creatine Kinase

Overview of Test

Creatinine kinase (CK), also known as creatine phosphokinase, is a catalyst in the reaction of creatine and adenosine triphosphate to adenosine diphosphate. CK was originally used as a marker for myocardial infarction, but more sensitive tests such as troponin and CK-MB are typically used for monitoring heart issues. CK is still very useful diagnostic tool in identifying diseases related to muscle breakdown, such as rhabdomyolysis and muscular dystrophy.
